One of the challenges as an American abroad – both living and travelling – are the preconceptions people have about us. You know – childlike, fat, shorts-wearing jingoists. Anyone who knows me, knows this isn’t universally true of Americans. I, for one, hardly ever wear shorts.
I’ll leave it up to you to decide the accuracy of this map, sent to me by Sarah Ebner who writes the Times’s School Gate blog.

Thanks for posting this…sadly, I think it’s a pretty accurate reflection of how many Americans think of the world. I wonder what the flip side is, how, say, Indonesians or South Americans see the world. You could work up a whole series of these.
What I think is especially hilarious is the “coffee comes from here I think” – that idea that it’s somewhere “down there” but why would we Americans be bothered to find out?
“They do our laundry and lawns” – Yikes!
