More comments to 'Me time'

My previous post about “me time” garnered some great comments. Because of a technical/human error, the post went up again the next day. Below are the comments people left on the second posting.

  1. Libby Purves recommends in How Not to be a Perfect Mother that parents take a week off and disappear without children once a year, by themselves, to do something they love. After years of grabbing measly snatches of (ugh) me-time in coffee shops, I took a 5 day break to Bulgaria and learned to ski. No children, no responsibility, no work. It was heaven, and it’s become an annual fixture.
We need to remember that we don’t check out our personalities at the door of the delivery room, and allow ourselves to carry on being the people we were before children. If that means solo childcare for a weekend so your partner can go mountain biking, it’s worth it, when you know in return you can have your weekend away.
Must go – I’m planning a trip to NYC to visit a girlfriend. Alone. Yippee!

  2. Great post. I too suffer toe-curling, shuddering moments when people talk about ‘me time’, because it implies you can’t be ‘me’ and do ‘me’ things with children around.
And hear hear to your day in Bournemouth with your friend. That’s not ‘me time’ that’s just enjoying life and doing fun things.
