Tips for eating at Snow’s BBQ in Lexington, Texas

In our ongoing quest for delicious barbecue and out-of-the-ordinary experiences, we drove to the small town of Lexington, Texas, to eat barbecue for breakfast.

It had to be done, so we did it. Also because my stepson made us.

It ended up being a fantastic morning (read my post about it here). Here are some tips for fellow barbecue enthusiasts who fancy a hot smoked adventure in Lexington at Snow’s BBQ.

Jenography’s tips for eating at Snow’s BBQ

1. Prepare for toll roads. The most direct route from Central Austin to Lexington takes you on 290 East, which is a toll road. There are no booths – cameras read your license tag. If you’re in a rental car, make sure you’ve arranged for toll coverage so you avoid those onerous “admin fees” they ding you with for unexpected tolls.
2. Take the right road if you want to avoid tolls. If you’re in a car without TXTag, stay on the access road (also — slightly confusingly — called 290 East but with signs that don’t ) until it converges with the other 290 outside of town, where you won’t be charged.
3. Arrive early. The queue at Snow’s on the day we went was slow and steady, always numbering about 30 people, including inside and out. If you turn up early like we did, you are guaranteed to eat. They open at 8am and when we left at 9:45 queue was growing slightly. Some say if you start queueing at 10 you’ll be served no problem, but don’t leave it too late. Show up at 1pm and you’ll likely find the doors locked tight.
4. Sign the guest book. Let them know how far you’ve come for great barbecue. We were feeling like their most farflung visitors on the day we visited, until we discovered 3 other Brits had already registered that morning.
5. Dress so you can sit outside. Whether there’s an early morning chill or gathering heat, wear clothes that allow you to sit outside. This is where the meat smokers are, where you can watch pitmaster Tootsie work, where you can chat with owner Kerry, where you can eat on picnic tables and enjoy the scene.
