I’ve been wanting to join in with the Sticky Fingers Gallery for ages but have only now gotten my act together. This week’s theme is Shoes. Tara writes:
Your favourite shoes, your everyday shoes, your first shoes, the family’s shoes. And you’d be surprised just how evocative and emotional shoes can be.
Such a rich vein – like many other women, I could spend a year and do a photographic dissertation on this subject.
My picture this week features my new Converse All Stars. The first boy I ever liked wore a pair of red Converse, at a time when every one else wore sporty Adidas. I bought my first pair years later, while living in New York, and scuffed around the East Village like I thought I was Joey Ramone. (He also wore them whenever I saw him walking down St Mark’s Place.)
Now the brand is owned by Nike and can be bought at chain stores in shopping malls. It’s crossed over from being counterculture cool to almost ubiquitous…but it still has that whiff of stale beer and rock and roll in my mind. This is my first pair of red ones. I expect that, like my old ones, they’ll last a decade or more. The brand will likely have gone in and out of style half a dozen times by then but as a symbol for a girl from a small Texas town, their iconic status endures.
how do you get them to last so long? I brought mine when I pregnant, by the time my son was 2 they had worn through, sadly they had to go. This reminds me I must replace them – great colour
I always get insoles and wear those little socks with them, but I’m not sure what my longevity trick is. Maybe loving them too much?
Can you believe that I got to the ripe age of 43 with 3 kids before I bought my first pair? I have missed so much converse life!

I must admit, i have been coveting a pair of navy blue ones, since my current pair are a bit flash.
I do love the color of these though – they are so cheery!
As we were walking down the street the other day my daughter said, Look, mummy! That boy has the same colour shoes as you do.
That does beg the question: why do I have the same shoes as a 14-year-old boy?
We’re not going to think about that right now.
I have silver converse shoes. I thought they were maybe a bit inappropriate for my age, but hey – I love them
