I have a special love for Wales. I don’t have any family or historical connection to it. We visited it and I thought, What an amazing part of the country. The landscape is special and striking, and, let’s face it, when it comes to place names, the more consonants the better.
We had a great stay at Cefn Barn in Talgarth, not far from Hay on Wye, and enjoyed a fab walk from our countryside barn into Talgarth and then on into Hay (with a little assist from the car to get to Hay). While I love a purely country walk, where you only see hills, dales and birds, this one highlights how a good country walk can take in local villages and their appeal as well.
Here are some of the reasons a walk here is so special.
Stay at the stylish Cefn Barn and this is your view starting out. It goes great with a cup of coffee
It’s sheep country here, so these little guys are everywhere
On the walk down to Talgarth, we ran into these father and son farmers and enjoyed a nice chat. They invited us for tea the next day
I loved the plants we passed by. I loved how craggy these branches looked
There’s nothing quite so quintessentially British to spy on a walk than a red telephone box
Talgarth Mill in Talgarth is a great place for coffee, cake, sandwiches, and a view over the mill stream

A personal love of mine is great signage, especially when its retro & modern at the same time. This one covered the entire side of a building in Talgarth.
We hopped in the car and drove over to Hay on Wye. No surprise: It’s a great place to buy books
Window shopping at little boutiques is a fantastic bonus at the end of a walk
Another benefit of a hearty countryside walk: A nice meal at the end of it.
